Besides Star Wars, I'm actually a pretty big John Wayne fan. And when I was reading about one of his movies The Searchers (voted 11th best movie of all time in 2002), It said it helped influence two Star Wars scenes. George Lucas has said that this is one of his most favorite films. The first scene is in Episode IV: A New Hope. In the Searchers, when Uncle Ethan (John Wayne) came back to his brother's family homestead, only to see the homestead in flames (most died). In A New Hope, it parallels when Luke came back to his burning home. The second is in Episode II: Attack of the Clones. In the Searchers, the character Martin sneaked into the Indian camp to save his sister, just like in AOTC when Anakin snuck into the Tusken Raider camp to try and save his mother. Besides The Searchers, I know that WWII plane coverage paralleled big time for the Millennium Falcon battle against the tie fighters in ANH. That's all I can think of, off the top of my head right now. I know there's more, anybody know of some more films that helped?

Akira Kurosawa's classic The Hidden Fortress (Kakushi-toride no san-akunin) was a huge influence on Star Wars, especially ANH. The droids' characters are more or less directly based on Tahei and Matakishi, while Obi Wan seems basically to be the same character as Rokurota Makabe. In addition to the characters, there are a number of thematic elements lifted directly from the story.

I know all of the Searchers scenes by heart, but never really noticed the big time similarities with Star Wars. Oh yes. I believed they mentioned that in the documentary, Empire of Dreams.

John Wayne is one of the few true American heroes. I feel like I've been shot in the chest every time I meet someone who doesn't know who he is. I have to say my two favorite movies where [glow=green,2,300]Sands of Iwo Jima[/glow] and [glow=green,2,300]The Green Berets[/glow]

I agree with your take on John Wayne, ThePartisan. And I love the Sands of Iwo Jima as well. I have the DVD and watch it often. And for more films that we have not mentioned in this thread is the Flash Gordon Serial. I've seen and heard George refer to this often when he talks about Star Wars in the documentaries.
