2011 will be a banner year for Dark Horse Comics. They will they be celebrating twenty five years of publishing and twenty years of Star Wars comics. Vice president of publishing Randy Stradley and others were on hand to announce the latest news at Celebration V.
The biggest news was the announcement of the long-awaited Star Wars: Crimson Empire 3 scheduled for 2011. Series creators Mike Richardson and Randy Stradley will be writing while Dave Dorman will be returning to paint the book covers. The six-issue series will start in March.
The long-running Legacy series has come to an end with issue #50, but the adventures of Cade Skywalker aren't over yet. Legacy - War is a 6-issue series that marks the return of the dreaded Sith Emperor Darth Krayt! The orginal Legacy team of John Ostrander and Jan Duursema are on hand to write and draw these major battles of galactic war. As Jan hinted at the panel, "Not everyone is going to survive this one." The Jedi, Galactic Alliance, Imperial Knights, and Cade Skywalker must all band together to quell the tide of the rising Sith Empire. Watch for the first issue to hit comic book stores this December.
Fett fans, rejoice! Jango Fett and Boba Fett are both featured in the upcoming series, Boba Fett - Blood Ties. Invasion writer Tom Taylor has penned a new story about how the father's actions end up affecting his son some twenty years down the line. Chris Scalf, of Purge fame, provides fully painted art for this multi-generational tale.
October will see the release of both The Force Unleashed Volume 2 trade paperback and The Force Unleashed II video game from LucasArts. The comic features a parallel storyline that looks at the events of the video game through the eyes of Boba Fett. Darth Vader entrusts a new, mysterious type of trooper to Fett's command to perform a mission that no one man can complete alone. Art by Omar Francia and story by The Force Unleashed creator and fan favorite, Haden Blackman.
Haden Blackman also writes Darth Vader and the Lost Command series which will start in January. Vader must journey into the Ghost Nebula to recover somebody near and dear to his nemesis, Grand Moff Tarkin.
The story arc The Old Republic - Threat of Peace will finish in September to be followed by the new Blood of the Empire series in October. Follow the life of Sith slave Teneb Kel as he works his way up from bondage until the Dark Council entrusts him with his ultimate mission: to hunt and destroy the Emperor's apprentice! This Sith vs. Sith adventure is written by Alexander Freed, one of the senior writers on the upcoming The Old Republic MMO game from LucasArts and Bioware.
Over one thousand years before Luke Skywalker and a generation before Darth Bane, there was the young Jedi knight Kerra Holt. The story of her first mission alone in the Sith Empire is told in Knight Errant - Aflame, written by John Jackson Miller and drawn by Federico Dellocchio. The comic series starts this October. Also, keep an eye out for an upcoming Knight Errant novel that will be written by Miller and published by Del Rey.
In other news, Dark Horse plans a hardcover special edition of Dark Empire with signed plates by Cam Kennedy to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the comic. A new Dark Times story is planned for next year. Fans who have been enjoying the omnibus editions of the old Marvel Star Wars comic series may be glad to know that the Droids and Ewoks comics are also slated for omnibus reprints, along with UK comics and the Star Wars 3-D comics originally published by Blackthorne Publishing. Also making a return next year is Dark Horse's first comic series, Dark Horse Presents. The anthology series will be back with new stories in various genres and we may see some Star Wars stories in the mix.
