Rouge Squadron was founded after the Battle of Yavin by Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles using the remnants of Red Squadron. The new fighter group proved its mettle at the Battle of Hoth shortly after its formation, although they did have several engagements prior to this. They defended the Hoth Echo Base with a minimal loss of pilots and equipment considering the odds they were up against, and even with only two fighters per transport against a fleet of Star Destroyers and the flagship Executer they still came out on top and escaped in one piece. Their next in movie battle was the legendary Battle of Endor to destroy Death Star II. By this battle Commander Luke Skywalker had resigned from Rouge Squadron leaving Wedge as the new Rouge Leader. For this battle Wedge temporarily re-named the squadron Red Squadron in honor of the fallen Yavin heroes. Several members of the squadron were lost in this battle although Wedge, Wes Janson, Hobbie Klivan, and several others are known to have survived. Wedge followed General Calrissian into the Superstructure and fired the shots that destroyed the North Power Regulator, leading to the reaction that destroyed the Station and winning the battle.

Well, since Gold Leader seems to have given up on this project, I think I can pick p where he left off and fill in what he left out. Questions, comments and clarifications are, of course, welcome.
Red Squadron was an X-Wing squadron originally attached to the Alliance High Command. Formed in 0 aby, it was made up of pilots from Dantooine Squadron (who had previously guarded the base abandoned on Dantooine), The Ecliptic Evaders (Biggs Darklighter's old unit, whose logo he wore on his flight helmet until he died), and the Tierfon Yellow Aces (former unit of both of such famous starfighter pilots as Wes Janson and Jek Porkins). Immediately after it's formation it was stationed on the Independence, before being transfered to Yavin Base. The Squadron gained infamy as the unit that killed the Death Star (despite the fact that all but two of the pilots were killed in the battle).
After the Battle of Yavin, the squadron was split into two groups. Renegade flight, a unit which actually predated the formation of Red Squadron, under the command of Commander Narra was separated from the new Rogue flight, under the command of Luke Skywalker. Rouge group flew a number of minor missions, including covering the defections of Tycho Celchu, Crix Madine, and Lt. Kasan Moor. In addition, they ran several escort missions, a daring rescue on Kessel, and played a pivotal role in the liberation of Gerrard V.
In the intervening Time, Renegade Flight (including Commander Narra) took heavy losses and was disbanded , causing Rogue flight to become Rogue Squadron. The newly christened Rogue Squadron (augmented by a number of temporary pilots including Dash Rendar) under the Command of Luke Skywalker played a key role in the battle of Hoth. In a concert with infantry and fixed defenses, Rouge Squadron fought a holding action, keeping Blizzard Force at bay long enough for the majority of the base to evacuate. Then, under the cover of fire from the ion cannon, they escorted the transports off planet and out of the system.

Thanks for the excellent read Silver. That was interesting to learn about Biggs squad and how he still wore the symbol for his last flight.

It is interesting to note that even years later, Derek "Hobbie" Klivian, a fellow veteran of The Ecliptic Evaders (and Red/Rouge Squardon) wore a strikingly similar insignia on his helmet.
Perhaps another version of the same logo?
